Our climate has changed. The UK is seeing higher winds and more rain than ever before so what trees are suited to this kind of harsh weather? Don't worry we've got you!

Across the UK we are being hit with harsh winds from a barrage of storms this winter. Most hardy trees should have some resistance to wind but there are trees that do tolerate windy conditions.

If you live in an area that is subject to wind, multi-stem trees could be a great option for you. The centre of gravity of a multi-stem is lower than a standard tree which makes it far less likely to snap.

Here are just a few species that can withstand wind:

Acer pseudoplatanus (Sycamore)

Acer campestre (Field Maple)

For consistently wet conditions the following trees are really very well adapted.

Salix alba Tristis (Weeping Willow)

Taxodium distichum (Swamp Cypress)

If you are tempted by alternatives, one thing you can do to aid planting success is mound plant, i.e. planting with half of the container root system above ground level and mounding up the soil to cover it. By planting proud of ground level you are likely to give the root system greater and longer access to oxygen as the some of the root system will be above the water line.

As you'll have noticed Alder and Popular can within stand wind and wet conditions so it makes a good choice for a particularly difficult garden.
